The scheme was set up by the Financial Services and Markets Act in 2000, and is administered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme Limited (FSCS).

The scheme aims to offer some protection if insurance companies get into serious financial difficulties. If this happens and it looks like an insurer may not be able to honour its contracts, the scheme may offer financial assistance to the insurer, by transferring policies to another insurer, or by paying compensation to eligible policyholders.
